The Many Heroes of Hurricane Harvey

Piece by piece, we have been rebuilding the city of Houston. In the midst of tragedy, it’s hard to keep the faith that things will get better. When someone is consumed by sorrow and hopelessness, things look bleak. We’re here to help and inspire those who are struggling. Through this natural disaster, many heroes (some known, many not) rose to the challenge of helping others who were in desperate need. We’d like to take a moment and recognize their efforts. “The Canoeing Surgeon” By far, one of our favorite stories that we have seen surface is the story of a doctor doing whatever it takes to perform a surgery on a patient. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Stephen Kimmel was called in to perform a surgery on 16 year-old Jacob Terrazas, who required immediate assistance. With the severe flooding, Kimmel couldn’t drive to the hospital, which was 10-15 minutes away. So instead, he spent over an hour canoeing, riding in a firefighter’s pickup truck, and even walked the last mile in waist-high w...

Honor A Great Man and Attend the MLK Grande Parade

In today’s world filled with constant chaos and turmoil, greatness and exceptional character need to be celebrated. History has shown us examples of how to get through troubling times. Some incredible figures have taught us that oppression and injustice do not have to be tolerated. While we could easily name hundreds of people who have made a positive impression on culture and what it values, there is one that no one could dispute: Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a man that constantly fought for equality, but he didn’t fight with weapons, his battle was fought with love, kind words, and peace. While his example is one we should honor every day, in just a few short weeks, we will pay his memory and his message special homage. The annual MLK Grande Parade in the heart of Houston is a weekend filled with exciting events that appropriately honor Martin Luther King, Jr. The event kicks off on Saturday, January 13th at 12:00 pm with the 12th Annual MLK Youth Parade. Expected to attra...
