The Many Heroes of Hurricane Harvey

Piece by piece, we have been rebuilding the city of Houston. In the midst of tragedy, it’s hard to keep the faith that things will get better. When someone is consumed by sorrow and hopelessness, things look bleak. We’re here to help and inspire those who are struggling. Through this natural disaster, many heroes (some known, many not) rose to the challenge of helping others who were in desperate need. We’d like to take a moment and recognize their efforts. “The Canoeing Surgeon” By far, one of our favorite stories that we have seen surface is the story of a doctor doing whatever it takes to perform a surgery on a patient. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Stephen Kimmel was called in to perform a surgery on 16 year-old Jacob Terrazas, who required immediate assistance. With the severe flooding, Kimmel couldn’t drive to the hospital, which was 10-15 minutes away. So instead, he spent over an hour canoeing, riding in a firefighter’s pickup truck, and even walked the last mile in waist-high w
