Piece by piece, we have been rebuilding the city of Houston. In the midst of tragedy, it’s hard to keep the faith that things will get better. When someone is consumed by sorrow and hopelessness, things look bleak. We’re here to help and inspire those who are struggling. Through this natural disaster, many heroes (some known, many not) rose to the challenge of helping others who were in desperate need. We’d like to take a moment and recognize their efforts.
“The Canoeing Surgeon”
By far, one of our favorite stories that we have seen surface is the story of a doctor doing whatever it takes to perform a surgery on a patient. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Stephen Kimmel was called in to perform a surgery on 16 year-old Jacob Terrazas, who required immediate assistance. With the severe flooding, Kimmel couldn’t drive to the hospital, which was 10-15 minutes away. So instead, he spent over an hour canoeing, riding in a firefighter’s pickup truck, and even walked the last mile in waist-high water. All because he knew that someone had to help this young man. Talk about an uplifting story!
“Spiderman Saves the Day”
A masked hero in a Spiderman costume appeared at a Texas shelter for Hurricane Harvey victims to surprise young children with stickers and encouraging words. In a video first seen on Twitter, Spiderman can be seen playing with the kids, and instantly boosting their spirits. He gained nothing from the experience- no money, no fame- all because it was for the kids and their benefit. Now that is a hero.
“Good Samaritans Create Houston Rescue Clinic”
Paul Middendorf was a good samaritan who stepped up to the plate with other Houstonians when they realized how severe the damage from Hurricane Harvey was going to be. While tragedy brought these group of strangers together, hope is what kept them going to create the Houston Rescue Clinic, a place where people could come to get vaccines and health screenings. They also are providing PTSD group sessions and compassion fatigue needs. When asked about his work, Middendorf, who runs a non-profit organization focusing on art, says, “Whatever the need was, that’s what we were there to do.”
We are rebuilding, restoring, and revamping our city. With the help of everyday heroes, this has all been possible. News headline seem to always be filled with tragic stories, so we hope that when you find this, it’s given a little hope back to you.
