The Many Heroes of Hurricane Harvey

Piece by piece, we have been rebuilding the city of Houston. In the midst of tragedy, it’s hard to keep the faith that things will get better. When someone is consumed by sorrow and hopelessness, things look bleak. We’re here to help and inspire those who are struggling. Through this natural disaster, many heroes (some known, many not) rose to the challenge of helping others who were in desperate need. We’d like to take a moment and recognize their efforts. “The Canoeing Surgeon” By far, one of our favorite stories that we have seen surface is the story of a doctor doing whatever it takes to perform a surgery on a patient. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Stephen Kimmel was called in to perform a surgery on 16 year-old Jacob Terrazas, who required immediate assistance. With the severe flooding, Kimmel couldn’t drive to the hospital, which was 10-15 minutes away. So instead, he spent over an hour canoeing, riding in a firefighter’s pickup truck, and even walked the last mile in waist-high w...

How Does Water Damage Restoration Work?

In light of the recent events that have happened in Houston, Texas with Hurricane Harvey, we at Camberg Law Firm thought that it would be in the best interest of our community to shed some light on water damage restoration. By now, we hope that almost everyone has been able to restore their homes, or are well on their way of completing the task. It’s of extreme importance that water damage is properly taken care of to exterminate any mold or pathogens and help get rid of contaminated water safely. Without the proper tools and equipment, you will not be able to fully dispose of what all lies within the dirty water, including chemical residues, animal...

Flood Relief: What Comes Next

Houstonians know the fear, pain, and loss that occurs after a natural disaster. Hurricane Harvey has passed, but has left its mark indefinitely on our community. As we begin to rebuild our lives and our city in the coming weeks and months, it’s extremely important that you know the next steps, and more importantly, your rights when it comes to flood damage. I’ve Just Been in a Flood- What Do I Do Now? There are several  safety precautions  that must be taken in order to move forward after a flood. Ideally, you should not return to your home until authorities have deemed it safe, and a qualified electrician should assess your home in case of any detrimental damage to your main electrical panel. After you’re given clearance, use extreme caution when entering your home, and check the foundation to make sure that the walls are still sturdy and safe. The flood water can be heavily contaminated with sewage and other pollutants, which can cause sickness and infections. I...

What Should I Expect After an Accident?

Whether you’ve been involved in a car wreck, workplace accident, or other injury-causing incident, you’re likely to be focused on immediate issues like medical treatment, repairs, and getting your life back. While this may consume all of your attention in the short term, it’s important to be on the lookout for other, more subtle, symptoms that may take a while to show up.  Worry and Anxiety After any incident involving serious injury, it’s common for those involved to be consumed with worry and anxiety. These emotions can make things even worse for the victim by causing them to be unable to sleep soundly, concentrate, or have the energy to enjoy life. Maybe you find yourself “reliving” the accident, worrying about what you could have done differently, possible unforeseen consequences of your injuries, or generally feeling out of control or helpless. One of the best and easiest ways to cope with anxiety and stress is to talk about your feelings. A trusted friend, family m...
